Sorbs and Wends and their national costumes

The Sorbian costume, often mistakenly called the "Spreewald-Costume", it is now worn in daily life only by elderly women. Even though there are different variations: for work, for church, for travelling to town or for celebrations.
But many girls and women can be seen in their celebrationand dance costumes at village and homeland festivals, at presentations of culture groups as well as at traditional events. Valuable embroideries decorate the pastel coloured neck scarves, the skirt ribbons and artistic tied bonnets.

White lace aprons or embroidered silk aprons are being tied over strong coloured woollen skirts. While the costumes of the pastwere sparsely decorated withembroideries or tiny pearls it takes now elaborate handicrafts to produce the splendour of the costumes with its detailed pattern and colours.
The embroideries' colour design should be used in popular complementary colours without being excessively colourful or shrill. A golden rule has been accepted. The colours of the embroideries should appear in a thrice combination and should be found in all parts of the costume that means in the skirt, scarf and also in the headscarf resp. bonnet.

The change of the colour design as well as the costume's regional differences in the Spreewald can be best appreciated at the Spreewald-Museum.
