The Palace Hoyerswerda
The palace in Hoyerswerda was originally built in the 13th century as a moated castle on the island's lowland of the Schwarzen Elster. It served until the 15th century as border fortress betweenBohemia and Brandenburg.
After fires and destruction in 1592 it was newly constructed in the renaissance style.Today it houses the town archive and the local museum. Exhibitions and concerts are given in the palace hall. A small animal park originated in 1959 at the former courtyard, it got the status of a 'zoo' 1994.
