Cistercian Abbey Convent St. Marienstern

The Kamenzer lord of the castle Bernhard III donated the Cistercian abbey convent St. Marienstern in 1248. Centre of the facility is the abbey church, a late-gothic three-nave hall church, which was built in the 2nd half of the 13th century. The west gable in baroque style was added in 1721. There is no belfry as it is custom for Cistercian churches.

Well worth seeing are the late-gothic winged altars as well as the wall paintings from the 16th century. Special features are the church windows, painted around 1375 and portraits of different saints as well are the coat of arms of noble families.

The convent is one of the few preceptories that serve since its founding in the Middle Ages one and the same designations. For more than 750 years a nun convent has been living here under the rules of the Holy Father Benedict and the order customs of the Cistercian.
